KOLLAM: An 11-year-old girl was found raped and killed inside a forest off Pathanapuram on Thursday. The girl belongs to the Scheduled tribe community and two men suspected to be involved in the rape and murder are from a different community. This resulted in communal tension erupting in the area as a mob gathered in front of one of the men's house threatening to set the house ablaze. A strong police posse has been posted in the area. The police said that the girl was residing at the Kadakamon Harijan Colony in Pathanapuram. This morning at 10 a.m., she approached her neighbour, Salim, asking change for Rs. 50. The man said that he would take her to a shop and get the change. She was then taken in the autorickshaw of his nephew, Shamir, to the Puvalikuzhi forest area and raped. The girl reportedly died from shock. The police were informed of the development by noon. Preliminary reports show that the girl was raped by Salim. He is absconding. The police have arrested Shamir and taken the autorickshaw into custody.
