Velugu group to the rescue of abandoned infant

Staff Reporter

  • The new-born left in community toilet
  • Its mother is said to be insane
  • Police say the infant will be allowed to be adopted by childless couple

ANANTAPUR: A woman, who was reportedly insane, left a new-born baby girl in the community toilet at the mandal headquarter village of Kudair, about 25 km from here, on Tuesday night.

However, the baby landed in the hands of women of the neighbourhood, who rushed to her on hearing her cries.

    Baby shifted to ICU

The women, all belonging to the Gram Aikya Sangham of Velugu, wasted no time in taking the baby girl to the home of one of the women, cleaned and fed her.

Then the members of the Sangham took a decision to adopt the girl.

As the police and revenue officials came to know about the incident on Wednesday morning they rushed to the Sangham office.

Though the women insisted that they would not part with the baby, the officials explained to them about the health of the infant and shifted the baby to the intensive care unit in the General Hospital here.

    Police supervision

Currently in the custody of the police, the new-born girl is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The officials said that the infant would be allowed to be adopted only by childless couples after improvement in her health and the credentials of the interested family are checked.
