JAIPUR: The Congress Party has charged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party Government in Rajasthan with "criminal negligence'' in not putting to use the funds collected from the public for providing relief to the tsunami victims. Timely assistance of the affected was what required and by not disbursing the funds deposited in the Chief Minister's Relief Fund after 152 days of the calamity reflected only apathy, the party noted. The Congress allegation came in the wake of the disclosure by the Chief Minister's Secretariat that Rs.3.62 crores, collected from the general public and various other sections of society, for tsunami relief was yet to be utilized. The information was given in response to an unstarred question from Hari Mohan Sharma, MLA and general secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee, on the status of funds collected for tsunami victims. The PCC's chief spokesperson, Chandrashekhar Baid, and Mr.Sharma in a joint statement on Thursday said that a total of Rs.17.82 crores, collected from the public and the Government employees, was lying with the Government. The State was yet to decide on adoption of the affected villages as well. "No affected area has been provided any assistance by the State Government. The Government also has no information on how much money has been collected by other organizations in the State in the name of tsunami,'' they pointed out.
