Five more die in heat wave

LUCKNOW: At least five persons succumbed to severe heat wave conditions in Uttar Pradesh as mercury soared above the normal level at several places in the State during the past 24 hours, the Met office today said. The maximum temperature in the State was recorded in Varanasi at 46 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees above normal, followed by Allahabad and Sultanpur which registered a high of 45 degrees Celsius.

According to reports received here, three persons died due to sunstroke and `loo' in Mahoba district and one each in Hamirpur and Orai.

Lucknow recorded the highest temperature of the season so far at 44 degrees Celsius, which was four degrees above normal, the weather office said adding, Bahraich and Jhansi also stayed at 44 degrees Celsius followed by Gorakhpur and Kanpur which registered a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius. The weather office said that barring isolated places where thundershowers are likely to occur, the remaining areas would continue to be under the grip of scorching heat during the next 24 hours. PTI
