CHENNAI: : The Central Silk Board has introduced a quality symbol, known as "Silk Mark", to ensure purity of silk in products.

It is an identifiable quality assurance label, affixed on pure and natural silk products, manufactured and sold by the authorised users of the "Silk Mark," P.M. Pandi, Deputy Director (Inspection), Central Silk Board, said here on Thursday.

Mr. Pandi said anyone who wanted to become a bona fide user of the mark should first become a member of the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), a society sponsored by the Board under the Ministry of Textiles.

The members could become authorised users, registering their names and executing a licence agreement with the SMOI.

The authorised users could use the logo in their products. All silk manufacturers, traders and dealers could become authorised users, becoming SMOI members.

Silk Mark would be similar to the Agmark symbol. In case of doubt, the consumer could test and confirm the products under the Silk Mark label for purity at the SMOI centres or testing centres of consumer organisations, authorised by the SMOI. If a complaint was found genuine, the authorised user concerned was bound to compensate the consumer. The SMOI would also suspend the authorised user and publicise the misuse. He said the response to the scheme in Tamil Nadu was good, and till March this year, the SMOI registered 183 members, of which 131 were authorised users. The SMOI supplied 3.5 lakh labels to authorised users after providing training to 123 of their representatives. It also launched publicity campaigns throughout the State to popularise the symbol.
