CHENNAI: : It is with the key intention of keeping the world's attention focussed on tsunami recovery that former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Tsunami Recovery, will visit the affected areas in Nagapattinam, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia over the next few days. During his visit to Nagapattinam on May 27, he is scheduled to go to the NGO Co-ordination and Resource Centre and an ITI temporary shelter, both maintained with UN support. The NGO Co-ordiantion Centre has been functioning in the Collectorate since January 1 this year to facilitate a co-ordinated interaction between the district administration and NGOs in the affected areas. With 400 NGOs working among those affected, it became essential to run such a centre at Nagapattinam. Supported by the NGOs, the Collector and United Nations, it acts as an advocacy body and a depository of data and resources to facilitate the work of all partners. It is managed by sectoral experts under the guidance of a steering committee.
Photo exhibition
Mr. Clinton will interact with NGO representatives and survivors, including women who have attended skills training programmes, organised by the International Labour Organisation. He will also view award-winning disaster-resistant shelter designs and a photo exhibition on the tsunami. He will survey the water and sanitation facilities provided post-tsunami and meet the `link leaders', who are youth volunteers trained by the U.N. to promote hygiene and to monitor the water and sanitation facilities. Also on his itinerary is a visit to a childcare and development centre, where he will interact with the staff.
