MANGALORE: With their counterparts in Udupi missing the naxalites around forests in Shankarnarayana police station limits by a whisker on Wednesday, police in Dakshina Kannada are not taking any chances. They have stepped up combing operations against naxalites in areas bordering Udupi and Chikmagalur districts in Venoor and Belthangady police station limits. The Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherjee, said special squads of drawn from the district police and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) are involved in the combing operations. Armed with sophisticated arms and ammunition, these squads are keeping up the pressure on naxalites, he added. Our Udupi Staff Correspondent reports: the Udupi district police on Thursday continued their combing operations in the Karkala, Hebri, Shankarnarayana and Kollur police station limits. Since the police expect the naxalites to come down from the hills of the Western Ghats for food, a close vigil is kept on villages at the foot of the ghats.
