MANGALORE: Speakers at a convention held here on Thursday by the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike said communal harmony is the only way to ensure progress and development. Fundamentalists should be put down at all costs, they added. Inaugurating the convention, Sambhaji Bhagat, convener of the Vidrohi Sanskritik Manch of Maharashtra, said the groups which proliferate the culture of hate among the youth are a cancer to society. They should be put down with a heavy hand, he added. Basavaraja Devaru of Revanasiddeshwara Mahamutt, Dharwad; Sufi scholar Abhjal-be-Aabani; moulvi S.M. Abdul Rashin Zaini and others spoke. The convention also recognised the role played by the "Tiger of Mysore," Tipu Sultan, in promoting communal harmony and his contribution to the Indian Independence struggle. The convention adopted six resolutions on the occasion. It urged the Government to protect Srirangapatana as a monument to Tipu Sultan and declare it a heritage town. Tipu's fort at Jamalabad in Belthangady, "Bombard Towers" at Sultan's Battery in Mangalore should also be given importance. The convention condemned the parading of Muslims by fundamentalists and wanted the police to take action against them. It also urged the Government not to allow marches by fundamentalists in Dakshina Kannada district.
