MANGALORE: Felling of trees in the Mangalore City Corporation limits has become tougher with the Forest Department, Mangalore division, issuing a notification that people should notify the department before felling or pruning trees. Various Acts and recent directives of the High Court have given enough teeth to the department to prevent felling of trees and destruction of greenery even in urban areas. Those who wish to cut trees on their premises should also notify the department. A notification issued here on Thursday quoted Section 8 of the Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act, 1976, and said people who intend to cut trees in their patta land for bona-fide purpose up to 2.83 cubic metres of timber, five tonnes of firewood, 50 poles and 50 bamboos in a calendar year should intimate the Tree Officer, the Assistant Conservator of Forests, Mangalore, or the Range Forest Officer in writing. To transport the felled tree or bamboos, they should fill Form No. 31 along with completing other formalities. Transit permit will be sanctioned by the Assistant Conservator of Forests after considering the spot inspection report of the Range Forest Officer. The notification available with The Hindu states that if the felling of trees is not for bona-fide purpose or does not conform with the specification and the said limits, it will be considered as destruction of greenery. Quoting a Karnataka High Court order, the notification said that if any person, institutions or department intends to cut trees, they should plant and protect two saplings for each tree cut.
