CHENNAI: S. Shyamala, a nurse at a primary health centre in Tirunelveli, found herself without a chair when she joined Government service. Later, she says, she had to ignore innuendoes and "resist" sexual advances by senior officials. These days Ms. Shyamala talks about the legal provisions on harassment at workplace, thanks to the recently-formed Tamil Nadu Government Women Employees' Federation. "We saw the need for forming the federation for women in the Government sector to tackle sexual harassment and gender discrimination," said its president P. Nirmala at a two-day workshop which began on Thursday. The session saw speakers, including filmmaker Bharathiraja and writer Rajam Krishnan, talking about the representation of women in media and the need for them to be aware of their rights. On Friday, apart from providing legal counselling, experts will be giving tips about health problems, including childbirth and contraception.
