MTC vehicle cut across lanes, rammed stationary vehicles

CHENNAI: An MTC bus ran amok at Thousandlights on Anna Salai on Thursday morning, ramming a number of cars and motorcycles before running over a woman.

The vestibule bus cut across lanes, ploughed through the vehicles at the signal at the Thiru Vi Ka Road-Anna Salai junction and ended up in the opposite lane. The traffic police identified the deceased as Poovarasi (42) of Tiruvottiyur, working as a storekeeper in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, T.Nagar. She was on her way to work, pillion riding on her son's motorcycle.

Police said the bus, Route no. E18, plying between High Court and Guduvanchery, hit three cars and two motorcycles before grinding to a halt. Poovarasi was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post mortem in another MTC bus that was heading for the shed. The driver, G. Mohan, has been arrested.

At the hospital, Yuvaraj, Povarasi's son, broke down every time a relative arrived. "We were standing there at the signal when the bus came and hit us," he said, wiping off his tears. "I fell to my right. By the time I got up, the bus had run over my mother." Twenty-year-old Yuvaraj is a technician-apprentice with BHEL at the same office where his mother worked.

"When I reached there, I saw the bus standing diagonally across the road," Mr. Harikrishnan said. "Yuvaraj escaped as he fell to his right. He was wearing a helmet." M. Soundararajan, driver of one of the cars that the bus rammed into, said he applied the brakes hard but the car kept moving. It was dragged for several feet before it rammed another car.

The MTC officials said the department's accident investigation wing would analyse the accident and initiate action against the driver. This was apart from the police action.

In another accident on Wednesday evening, a college student was crushed to death by an MTC bus at the T.Nagar bus terminus.

Police said B. Damodaran (19), a student of Thangavel Engineering College, Karapakkam, attempted to enter the terminus through the outgate as the bus (Route no. 12) was coming out. He was caught between the bus and the pillar of the gate. He was taken to the Government General Hospital in another MTC bus where he was declared dead.
