CHENNAI: : A fact-finding team of human rights activists on Thursday met Greater Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj to gather details of a child adoption racket the city police unearthed a few weeks ago. The team seeks to figure the extent of the case beyond the adoption agency in the light of the alleged nexus between child lifters and the adoption agency. The team is also trying to understand the legal provisions under which the case can be taken beyond the Malaysia Social Service, the agency under probe, and bring other agencies under investigation. The process of adoption involved legal procedures with only the procurement of the child being under question. The process has several grey areas too. Bar on tracing the biological parents, for example, is one such issue that is used effectively by the adoption agency, they said. The team will come out with a preliminary report in a few days. The team comprises Enakshi Ganguli Thukral, national convenor, Campaign Against Child Trafficking (CACT), Sujatha Modi, women's rights activist, C. Nambi, State convenor, CACT, Ossie Fernandez, Human Rights Foundation, Bhakthavatsalam, lawyer, Rajagopalan, educationist, and Girija Ramababu, child rights activist.
