Furore over construction of flyovers

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Construction of flyovers and lack of financial support from Government caused a furore at the general body meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad on Thursday. The project came for approval, but the one at RTC crossroads (given up on a Minister's insistence) too was incongruously put on the list.

This was nothing but "bypassing" the council, members said. "What is the point in discussing about new flyovers when much work has already been done. We should have discussed it earlier," observed the BJP Floor leader, Shyam Sundar Goud.

Officials blamed

The Deputy Mayor, Subash Chanderji, the Majlis Floor leader, Nazeeruddin, and others too charged officials with keeping corporators in the dark. The Rajya Sabha member, P. Madhu, felt that ignoring the MCH went against the spirit of the 74th constitutional amendment of giving powers to local bodies.

The MCH Additional Commissioner of Traffic and Transportation, N.V.S. Reddy, said that tenders for flyovers were called for following a Government Order and the RTC crossroads project was kept in abeyance. Rest of the flyovers' design was being done in a transparent manner with the best of technical know-how.

If a flyover was not being taken up on the busy Ameerpet-S.R. Nagar corridor, it was only because it fell on the proposed metro rail route. But, the Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, too felt the Council's permission should have been taken before taking any step.

Intervening, the MCH Commissioner, Sanjay Jaju, said it was only a Government directive and "only the concept has been cleared and the administrative sanction from the Government will come after the council's ratification."

Hyderabad was among eight cities selected for the National Urban Renewal Mission and it could get up to Rs. 500 crores to Rs. 600 crores to meet its infrastructure needs, he said, adding that a presentation would be made on a perspective plan for the city in New Delhi shortly.

Mr. Jaju suggested making a request to the State Government seeking its support for such big projects. The council ratified enhancing the monthly honorarium of the Mayor to Rs. 15,000, and that of the Deputy Mayor and the Chairperson, Standing Committee, to Rs. 10,000 and that of the corporators to Rs. 5,000. It was also decided that the proposed multipurpose sports complex at Ameerpet would be named after Guru Gobind Singh.
