Top priority for road widening, says Jaju

Tells MCH general body meet that work will be done in the fast-track mode

CALLING ATTENTION: BJP corporators waving the agenda papers at the MCH general body meeting on Thursday.

HYDERABAD: Road-widening and junction improvement will be accorded top priority and works will be done in the fast-track mode. "You will see a difference in the next two to three months," said the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad Commissioner, Sanjay Jaju, here on Thursday.

He told the MCH Council at its general body meeting that officials had started making field surveys and special task force teams, comprising engineering and planning department officials, would be formed to expedite the works.

Mr. Jaju said this after many corporators criticised officials for delay in road-widening and junction improvement works. Court cases and opposition from affected parties were cited as reasons for the delay, but this did not cut ice with them.

Explanation sought

The Chanchalguda corporator, Amjadullah Khan (Majlis Bachao Tahreek), sought an explanation for pending work near the Yakutpura railway station, road- widening at Saidabad and Dabeerpura. "I am tired of running around officials. Encroachments have come up again in the widened sections," he said. Other members complained of slackness in the execution of works in different parts.

Mr. Jaju said that wherever there were no obstructions or litigations for junction improvement, work would be completed in a week and at other places in a couple of months. If need be, the Land Acquisition Act would also be applied.

The BJP Floor leader, Shyam Sundar Goud, urged him to consider allowing selling of `FSI under transfer of property rights' for easier road-widening exercise.

Earlier, ratification of signing of minutes of the meetings held on December 4 and February 5 became contentious when members protested against `mistakes' in printed copies. They also made an issue of the delay in modernisation of five slaughterhouses and maintenance of streetlights, both modern and conventional.

Upkeep of market yards

Order prevailed only on an assurance by the MCH Commissioner to look into these subjects afresh. Modernisation of 24 listed market yards was another subject that generated heated debate with members accusing officials of giving wrong information.

They also brought to the council's notice many other markets, which were being maintained badly.

Mr. Jaju said he would study each market yard and even identify space for tenants during modernisation.

Later, the council approved the move to seek Government's approval for collecting one-third of goodwill amount from existing tenants in all markets to the general rate as decided through auction.

Monthly meetings

Bowing to the demand of corporators from different parties in the last couple of years, the Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, decided to henceforth hold the general body meeting every month.

In one of his rare rulings and exercising his powers, Mr. Reddy told the MCH Secretary, P.V. Lakshmi Reddy, and the Commissioner, Sanjay Jaju, to make arrangements for such a meeting regularly.

Corporators pointed out that many issues were left untouched as the elected body had met only nine times in the last three years.

Also, several members were not getting the chance to put forth their demands.
