Sharp showers

and black-out

MADURAI: : Sharp shower lashed the city on Thursday night. The rain that followed strong wind was accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Though residents got a reprieve from the sultry night, they had to put up with power cut in some parts of the city.

Water level

The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 112.5 feet with no inflow and discharge. The level in the Vaigai dam was 29.36 feet with no inflow and a discharge of 41 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 1569 mcft.

Tekkadi received a rainfall of 5 mm followed by Periyar dam - 2 mm. — Staff Reporter

Fatal fall for policeman

A police head-constable had a fatal fall at Vadipatti near here on Thursday. According to police sources, Chandrasekhar (48), attached to the Vadipatti police station, was proceeding to a petition enquiry when the incident occurred.

The victim was rushed to a private hospital where he died. The Vadipatti police have registered a case.

PF office upgraded

The Sub-regional office of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation at Madurai under the Union Ministry of Labour has been upgraded as Regional Office following reorganisation of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry region. The office will cover the revenue districts of Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Theni, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.

B.S.V. Sharma has taken over the charge of the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner in Madurai with effect from May 22 and Kavitha N. George as Regional Provident Fund Commissioner-II from May 25 at the Regional Office in Madurai, according to an official release.

Fined for violating TNEB norms

A surprise check was conducted by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials at Saptur area, Tirumangalam division, recently revealed that 40 consumers violated the TNEB norms.

A fine of Rs. 36,600 was imposed on them.

The violations came to light when an 18-member team of engineers, led by the Assistant Executive Engineer (General), M. Narayanan, checked 1582 electricity connections in the area, according to a TNEB release.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply in the following areas between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday owing to the maintenance work to be carried out at the Villapuram sub-station: Solaialagupuram, Bharathiar Road, Jaihindipuram, Jeeva Nagar, Ramiah Street, Sunbramaniyapuram, Rathinapuram, Sundarajapuram, M.K. Puram, Kalavasal, Villapauram, Aavaniapuram, By-Pass Road. Venkatachalapuram, TPK Road, Periyar Bus Stand, Town Hall Road, Nethaji Road, Melavasal, South Masi Street, South Aavani Moola Street, areas around Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, East Veli Street, Chinthamani Road, Vazhaithoppu, South Gate Chinnakadai Street, South Marret Street, Panthadi Street, Manjanakara Street, South Veli Street, Thavittu Santhai, Panaiayur Road, Keeraithurai and Deluxe Theatre areas. — Staff Reporter.
