Waste treatment plant: firm to be chosen soon

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The selection of the firm to implement the solid waste treatment plant for Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram will be made this week.

Three firms have responded to the tender floated by the Kochi Corporation for the project. The FACT Engineering and Design Organisation (FEDO) would make the final selection for the Corporation.

Council approval

The Kochi Corporation council on Thursday ratified a proposal of the steering committee of the Corporation to utilise the funds of the Kerala Development Programme to purchase land and set up the plant. C.K. Manisankar, T.J. Vinod and C.G. Ramesh took part in the discussion.

Under the Kerala Development Programme, Rs. 2.4 crores has been sanctioned for the purchase of land and Rs. 2 crores for setting up the plant. This sum has to be utilised before May 31 failing which it would lapse. The steering committee has suggested that Rs. 4,30,64,955 shall be raised from the above heads for purchase of the land for the project from 102 landowners.

Though the fund earmarked for setting up the plant would be diverted for purchase of land, the Corporation can realise funds from other sources for setting up the plant, said the Mayor, C.M. Dinesh Mani.

The Empowered Committee, on May 23, had approved the land value fixed by the district-level purchase committee for 65.2 acres that is to be taken over for the project. Following this decision, the steering committee of the Corporation, which met on Tuesday, suggested that 50 per cent of the land value could be given in advance to the landowners who are residing in the area. Those persons, who own the land but are not residing there, shall be given 20 per cent of the land value, the committee suggested.
