KOCHI: The Minister for Education, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, reiterated here on Thursday that the State Government was fully supporting the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in its bid to be raised to the status of an Indian Institute of Technology. The Minister was speaking to reporters here after formally accepting the textbooks for the ensuring school academic year from the Kerala Books and Publications Society, Kakkanad. Mr. Basheer said the Union Ministry for Human Resource had recommended certain steps to be taken by CUSAT prior to it being considered for being raised to the status of an IIT. The university authorities were engaged in meeting some of these requirements and the State Government was backing their initiatives. One of the steps to be taken by CUSAT is to find more land to extend the existing Kalamassery campus. The Minister's assurance on the support of the State Government, including on land acquisition for extension of the present campus comes close on the heels of the positive outcomes in the discussions between the university authorities and the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, in Thiruvananthapuram recently. It is learnt that the State Cabinet will take a decision soon on acquiring 300 more acres of land for CUSAT campus extension as it joins the race to be upgraded as an IIT. The Government will also consider changing the status of the university from that of a State institution to that of a national entity.
