Twist to assault case

Staff Reporter

Police probing proxy surrender

HYDERABAD: An inquiry has been ordered into the reported surrender and arrest of persons who are not associated in an assault case in the Amberpet police station area.

Rumours have been doing rounds in the locality for the past few days that two persons surrendered in the place of the accused -- Rajesh and Satish -- in connection with an assault case registered in the first week of May.

According to the Amberpet police, a city Congress leader, Prameela's sons -- Vinod and Rajesh -- and a Telugu Desam leader, Hanumaiah's son, K. Satish, allegedly attacked a person, M. Mallesh, on May 1. Mallesh was serving dinner at his relative, Balraj's house when the trio picked up a quarrel with him and assaulted him.

Based on Mallesh's complaint, the police arrested Vinod who was later released on bail. On May 5, Prameela and Hanumaiah saw to it that their sons -- Rajesh and Satish -- surrendered. The police produced them in the court. Incidentally, the two were remanded to judicial custody as they could not produce sureties of Rs. 20,000 as per the court's direction. Three days later, they came out on bail.

"We got a wind that Prameela and Hanumaiah had surrendered two other youngsters of their locality -- Venkatesh and Sudarshan -- in the place of Rajesh and Satish respectively," the East Zone DCP, K.V.R.N. Reddy, said. Hence, an inquiry was ordered to find out the facts. The Amberpet police had summoned Rajesh and Satish who denied the allegations.
