THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : The Government is considering a proposal to stagger school timings in the city to ease traffic congestion on major routes, the Minister for Public Works, M.K. Muneer, announced here today.

He was addressing mediapersons after a three- hour-long visit to assess the progress of the road development projects in the city. Mr. Muneer said the proposal would be discussed with the Education Department and the traffic police.

Mr. Muneer said directives had been issued to complete the work on key routes before the schools reopen in June. One half of the Pattoor Bridge would be reopened to traffic on June 1 while the second half was expected to be completed by mid-June. The newly-completed bridge across the Karamana river is scheduled to be inaugurated in the first week of June. The Minister said officials had been instructed to complete repair works on major roads before the onset of the South-West monsoon.

Avenue trees

Mr. Muneer said the Government was working on a plan to plant avenue trees on both sides of the major roads in the city, including the Pattom- Plamoodu and the Karamana-Killipalam stretches. The Social Forestry Department would be consulted on the selection of species and the method of planting.

Moves were on to strengthen the coordination committee for the City Roads Improvement Scheme, Mr. Muneer said. The project was being taken up in a phased manner to minimise inconvenience to the public. The widening of a major portion of the Airport-Chakka road corridor would be completed in two weeks. The Palayam underpass is scheduled to be opened to traffic by July 31. Work on the Mannanthala Road is expected to be completed in three months while the Ulloor-Aakulam stretch is to be finished in two months. Mr. Muneer said the Government was assessing the feasibility of constructing two flyovers at Pattom and Peroorkada to reduce traffic congestion. The Arattu Road from the SP Fort Hospital to Eenchakkal was being developed for two-lane traffic.
