Enclave for senior citizens in January

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Two senior police officers were present at an event here on Thursday to launch what could be the city's first self-contained senior citizens' enclave.

The promoters made it clear it will not be another "old-age home" in any way.

The Additional Commissioners of Police H.C. Kishore Chandra (Law and Order) and M.C. Narayan Gowda (Crime) pointed out that for several months now, there have been fewer cases of elderly persons living alone being murdered for their valuables.

However, senior citizens are a vulnerable section and the police are concerned about their safety.

"While we can ensure their physical security, their emotional well-being depends on many other factors. Old age can be lonely for many. With nuclear families here to stay, self-contained enclaves, where elders enjoy security and the companionship of like-minded people of their own generation, can meet a serious need,'' the police officers said.

Col. (retd.) Philip George, managing director of Second Innings, the enclave, said the project may be upmarket but the costs are kept within the means of many retirees with almost half the cost being a refundable deposit.

Second Innings is coming up near Whitefield and will be ready for occupation by January 2006. The residents will be encouraged in community service work — helping the local community and schools, Col. George said.
