One more dies of meningitis

NEW DELHI: One more death and six new cases of meningococcal meningitis have been reported in the Capital during the past 24 hours. The death occurred at Hindu Rao Hospital.

The death toll now stands at 37, while the total number of cases has touched 366.

Deemed university

NEW DELHI: In what could be a major boost to scientific education in India, University Grants Commission has in principle granted deemed university status to Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR), the world's largest public funded research organisation. ``The UGC in principle has granted deemed university status to CSIR which, with a large number of laboratories and field trial centres, would give a tremendous boost to research based education in all fields except atomic research,'' Science and Technology Minister, Kapil Sibal, said.

Medicity

NEW DELHI: Gurgaon will get a 250 million dollar Multispeciality hospital by the year 2007 after Thursday's agreement between American Multinational General Electric (GE) and Dr Naresh Trehan floated Medicity.

``Medicity is a multi super speciality hospital where different streams like cardiac care, orthopaedics, paediatrics and several more will be under one roof in a sprawling 43 acre area and also will have traditional systems of medicine,'' Dr Trehan said talking to media persons.

Unauthorised shops

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi Government, NDMC and Delhi Police to remove the unauthorised squatters on the pavement near the Safdarjung Hospital within seven days.

A division bench comprising of Chief Justice, B C Patel, and Justice S K Kaul ordered for the removal of the unauthorised shops from the pavement within a week and file a status report.

Murder case solved

NEW DELHI: A young man has been arrested on charges of killing a woman at a Nabi Karim hotel in Central Delhi on May 22.

According to the police, the body of Sarojini, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, was found in her room at Hotel India Continental with blood oozing from her nose. The police did not find any fingerprints from the spot. They found that Sarojini had made a few calls from the hotel to on May 21 and 22.

Investigations led the police to Suresh Menon, who was staying at Hotel Sita International. From him, they recovered the keys to Sarojini's hotel room. He was subsequently arrested. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to having murdered her because she refused to return Rs. 30,000 that she had taken from him to arrange visas for him and his wife.

Protected monument

NEW DELHI: The Union Government on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that the historic Moghul monument, Jama Masjid is a ``disputed property''.

Appearing before the division bench of Chief Justice, B C Patel, and Justice, S K Kaul, Additional Solicitor General, P P Malhotra, said it was yet to be decided who was the custodian of the 355-year old mosque built by Moghul Emporer Shahjahan.

The court was hearing a PIL seeking declaration of Jama Masjid as a protected monument.
