BANGALORE: After 23 years of service to the welfare of mentally challenged citizens of Hubli, by providing them with education and rehabilitation help, Vaishali Vinay Gore was honoured by the Karnataka Parents' Association for Mentally Retarded Citizens (KPAMRC) on Wednesday.
`Silver jubilee award'
At the valedictory function of the silver jubilee celebrations of the KPAMRC, Ms. Gore was presented the "silver jubilee award" by the former Minister, M. Chandrashekhar, also a parent of special children. Over two per cent of the population in India is mentally challenged. The KPAMRC, along with several other institutions, is trying to create awareness among the people about the problems faced by the mentally challenged persons and reduce the stigma associated with the disease.
Special educators
K.R. Venkatesh, president of KPAMRC, said that the association had realised early the importance of special educators to help special children. In the late 1970s, it set up a teacher-training programme in mental retardation, he said. The association also conducts a diploma course in autism and learning disabilities as well as offers four-month training programmes in both these areas, he added. KPAMRC is also developing a home for the mentally retarded children. The home will be like a foster home where a group of parents will act as caretakers of all the children. "It is an answer to the essential question of who will take care of our children after us," Mr. Venkatesh said.
