`Power loom bandh' call gets support

Staff Correspondent

Bandh is in protest against the failure of the Government to fulfil its promises

BELGAUM: The Karnataka Vimochana Ranga and Mahila Jagruti have extended support to the "power loom bandh" call given by the Uttara Karnataka Nekarara Abhivruddhi Sangha.

The Sangha has called upon all power loom weavers in the region to strike work from June 1 in protest against the failure of the Government to fulfil its promises and solve the problems of the weavers. The strike is also in support of the Sangha's three main demands: Waiver of interest on all loans availed of by power loom weavers; subsidised tariff for electricity connections to power looms and fresh loans at six per cent interest as in the case of farmers.

The weavers have been fighting to get solutions to their long-pending problems. The S.M. Krishna Government had announced a special package just before the announcement of the general elections.

The Congress-Janata Dal (S) Government has also came out with a package and provided nearly Rs. 62 crores in the annual budget for the financial year 2005-06, besides promising subsidised tariff for power connections and other relief.

But many of the promises made to the weavers have remained only on papers, the two organisations have said.

The Textiles Minister, Satish L. Jarkiholi, who hails from the district, had threatened to resign as a mark of protest against the inadequate allocation of funds but retracted on his decision. He had then maintained that the funds allocated in the budget were inadequate to provide any reasonable succour to the weavers whose condition was pitiable.
