Execute Jayamkondam power project: committee

PERAMBALUR: : The Assurance Committee of the Tamil Nadu Assembly will recommend to the State Government to execute the Jayamkondam Lignite Power Project by setting up a plant of 1,500 MW capacity utilising the raw material available in and around Jayamkondam.

Addressing presspersons at the end of the committee's sitting here on Friday, its Chairman, L. Santhanam, said that land to an extent of 3,500 hectares had been acquired for the project. The plant, when completed, would generate job opportunities to numerous persons in and around Jayamkondam.

Mr. Santhanam said he had advised officials attached to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation to expedite construction of rest room and restaurant at an outlay of Rs.50 lakhs at Gangaikonda Cholapuram. .

He said that the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation would allocate sites to entrepreneurs to start small-scale units. It had acquired land for the purpose near Perambalur.

The committee reviewed 37 assurances of which 20 had been implemented. Officials have been advised to execute the rest 17 assurances, he said.

D.Arumugam, V. Krishnamurthy, R. Saroja, C. M. Suriyakala, all MLAs, other members of the committee, were present.

Earlier, the members visited the Perambalur Agricultural and Rural Development Bank and held a discussion with officials on the new design suggested by the State Government for construction of own buildings by cooperative banks. The Collector, D. Vivekanandan, accompanied the committee.
