CHENNAI: : The Justice S.S. Subramani committee will pass orders a week after June 7, when it will meet again, on the pleas by different associations for conducting a common entrance test for admission to the management quota seats in unaided engineering colleges. Mr. Justice Subramani told presspersons here that the committee heard the views of the consortium of self-financing arts, science and engineering colleges associations in Tamil Nadu, the All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association (AIMECA) and the Association of Minority Unaided Christian Institutions (AMUCI), which sought permission for conducting the CET. As for the private management associations' request that the committee await the Supreme Court's judgment on a batch of petitions on admissions and fee structure in private colleges, he said the verdict was not expected before July 11, when the court reopens after summer vacation. It would be too late by then. He said the committee told the AMUCI that the association could not be given permission because as per the directions of the Supreme Court, the question of minority or non-minority did not arise. The association requested that it be allowed to participate, along with the AIMECA. But this morning, association secretary Peter informed the committee that it was withdrawing the alternative request and said it would go along with the consortium. Subsequently, a representative of the association told that it stood by its earlier request. He said the consortium submitted that it included 20 colleges from the AMUCI. While the AIMECA had given a list of 166 colleges that supported it, the consortium furnished the names of 153 colleges. The total number of private colleges was only 229. He asked the Director of Technical Education to verify the lists.
