KOLLAM: The chairman of the Legislative Committee on Subordinate Legislation, T. V. Chandramohan, has said that it has been brought to the attention of the committee that minors taken into custody by the police are being subjected to brutal third degree measures before entrusting them to juvenile homes. He was talking to press persons after visiting the Juvenile Home here on Friday. He said that while the Juvenile Justice Act stipulates that only special juvenile police should deal with minors, it is found that the police many a time treat minors taken into custody as hardcore criminals. Earlier, the committee held a sitting at the District Collectorate for assessing the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act. Testimonies in this regard were taken from officers of the Social Welfare Department and representatives of various NGOs.
