KOLLAM: Heart-rending scenes were witnessed at Kadkamon township near Pathanapuram on Friday afternoon when the body of the 11-year-old rape victim, Priya, was brought to her house after an autopsy at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Hundreds of persons had gathered at the house in Kadamon Ambedkar Colony to pay their last respects. The body was cremated at 5 p.m. Kadakamon town observed a hartal today. Priya, hailing from a Scheduled community, was raped and killed on Thursday morning by a 28-year-old man identified as Salim. The body was found in an eucalyptus plantation in the forest area off Pathanapuram. The police said that the body was found naked and smeared in blood. Salim is still at large. Police have, however, taken into custody an autorickshaw driver, Shamir, in connection with the incident. It was in Shamir's autorickshaw that Priya was taken to the forest area. The autorickshaw has been taken into custody. Priya was a student of Std. 1V at a local school. The Adoor MP, Chengara Surendran, has called for the immediate arrest of the persons involved in the rape and murder of Priya.
