KOCHI: The All India Spices Exporters Forum (AISEF) has slammed "reports released in the press from certain quarters" about import of black pepper into the country for re-export of value-added products. At a press conference here on Thursday, office-bearers of the forum alleged that reports appearing in the media had been released by "vested interests" and that these had misled the public and the Government. Their submission is that since the exporters account for 95 per cent of the pepper business in the country, they and the Spices Board should be taken into confidence before any changes are made in the policies under the liberalised economic regime. The Forum president, Thomas Philip, said the fall in pepper prices was due to "unprecedented increase in world production" that had gone up from 2.54 lakh tonnes in 2000 to 3.40 lakh tonnes in 2004.
