BANGALORE: Hargovind Rai made it a day to cherish, winning his first gold medal in a national athletic meet. The Maharashtra youngster bagged the 100 metres for boys' under-18 in the second REVA National Youth athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Friday. Hargovind clocked 10.93 and set a new meet record in the process. The SAI Centre, Mumbai trainee was well ahead of the second placed K.P. Anoop of Kerala, who clocked 11.20s. The top five athletes in the boys 100m achieved the qualifying mark for the World Youth Athletics Championship to be held at Marrakech in July. In the 100m for girls, Kerala's C.T. Raji took the top spot, beating Tamil Nadu's A. Jessy. The first two runners achieved the qualifying mark for Marrakech. A heavy downpour forced the postponement of the boy's high jump event. The event will be completed on Saturday. The contentious overage issue was again underlined with 28 athletes prevented from participating. All athletes including national record holder in the girls discus throw event failed to produce satisfactory documents regarding their age.
