KANNUR: The National Congress (Indira) leader, K. Karunakaran, has said that his party will go to any extent to ensure the defeat of the UDF candidates contesting the byelections in the Koothuparmba and Azhikode Assembly constituencies here. Talking to reporters, Mr. Karunakaran said that the party would fulfill the aspirations of the people to dislodge the UDF in the State. The people were now fed up with the UDF Government. Asked whether he would openly support the CPI(M) in the byelections, he said NC(I) workers knew whom to give their votes. Reacting to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy's remark that the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, was an enemy of development of the State, Mr. Karunakaran said that Mr. Chandy himself and the former Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, deserved to be named enemies of the State's development. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, owed an explanation to Congress workers as to what urgent situation existed in New Delhi for the party to give a Rajya Sabha ticket to Mr. Antony and call him to the capital. Earlier, only competent party leaders had been called to New Delhi, he said adding that Mr. Antony had proved himself a bad administrator as Chief Minister of the State. Mr. Karunakaran said that his party would contest the byelection in the Cherthala Assembly constituency that would be now left vacant with the election of Mr. Antony to the Rajya Sabha. The party would resist any moves by the State Government for not holding the election in the Cherthala constituency. Later, he addressed the NC(I) district convention and a public meeting. There was a large turnout of party workers at the convention, he said.
