Writers never retire, says Sethu

Sethumadhavan's contribution to Malayalam literature hailed

THRISSUR: There is no retirement age for writers, litterateur and chairman of the South Indian Bank Limited, A. Sethumadhavan (Sethu), said. Mr. Sethumadhavan retires from the bank on June 5.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Jubilee Cultural Club here on Friday to felicitate him, Mr. Sethumadhavan said that he preferred to be known as a writer than as a banker.

"As a banker, I bid adieu. But, as a writer, I'll be around," he said.

The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, recalled Mr. Sethumadhavan's contribution to Malayalam literature.

"He has steered clear of controversies and is a sweet presence in the literary world. As he retires and proceeds to Chendamangalam, his native village, he leaves behind in Thrissur a precious asset: the close rapport with people that he has developed," the Speaker said. The Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, said the writer in Mr. Sethumadhavan had helped him be a good banker. "It has helped him understand people's problems."

The Archbishop, Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, extolled Mr. Sethumadhavan's role in promoting communal harmony.

Mr. Sethumadhavan's literary works include `Pandavapuram', `Velutha Koodarangal', `Pedi Swapnangal', `Thaliyola', `Kiratham', `Niyogam', `Sethuvinte Kathakal' and `Kaimudrakal'. He had received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards in 1982 and 1978 for his works `Pandavapuram' and `Pediswapnangal' respectively. He was a member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi in 1991. Mr. Sethumadhavan had also served as assistant general manager of the State Bank of Travancore and State Bank of Hyderabad.
