KOTTAYAM: As part of its effort to take eco-activism to the people the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will form a human chain through the shores of Vembanad Lake from Kumarakom to Thanneermukkom Bund on May 29, focusing on the massive pollution facing the lake. According to DYFI office-bearers, the human chain would also focus attention on the evils of mechanised sand-mining, reclamation of paddy fields, and destruction of the hillocks through excavation and levelling for construction purpose. The DYFI leaders said that unprecedented growth of what they termed the ``real estate mafia'' and mechanised sand-mining from the area had already resulted in drinking water shortage. Together with sand-mining the same interests were also engaged in levelling of the hillocks in the eastern side of the district. The human chain is the culmination of a three-month campaign.
