ALAPPUZHA: The Department of Psychiatry at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital (MCH) is organising a comprehensive programme with the cooperation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to help the tsunami-hit people whose mental health had been affected following the catastrophe. Varghese P. Punnoose of the department of psychiatry who explained the details of the programme at a press conference on Friday said a two-day training camp for social workers and health workers would be held at the lecture hall of the MCH at Vandanam on May 30 and 31. The Alappuzha district panchayat president, K.H. Babujan, would inaugurate the training programme. The medical college Principal, A.V. Ramadevi, will preside. A workshop would be held on May 31 at 10 a.m. Mr. Punnoose said the studies conducted by the department in tsunami-hit panchayats had found that the mental health of children and senior citizens had been affected. He said some of the problems lying latent in the minds of the tsunami-affected may lead to future problems.
