COIMBATORE: Kerala State Electricity Board (Thiruvananthapuram) women overcome a fighting Eastern Railway 61-55 in the semifinal league of the fourth all-India basketball tournament for the CRI Pumps Trophy at the VOC Park Corporation Sports Complex courts here on Friday. It was the Railway women calling the shots in the first two quarters. Mary Kutty Augustine and Mridhula Adil played a brilliant game to help the team post a 17-point lead. The Kerala team had virtually no bench strength to boast of or experiment. And, that cost the team dearly in the opening half. However, the last two quarters saw them go flat out. Sonia Joseph and Lajitha tore open the Railway defence to score baskets with ease. So did Liza Rani and captain Ambli Thomas. With the players combining well, KSEB raced to a five-point lead (49-44) for the first time in the match. From then on it was Kerala all the way.
Indian Army prevails
Riding on the brilliance of Phool Singh (19 pts), strong contender Indian Army (Delhi) cruised to a 64-58 win over INS Shivaji (Lonawala) in the semifinal league of the 47th All India basketball tournament for the Nachimuthu Gounder Cup.
