KURNOOL: Arrangements are in place for the two-day Rythu Sadassu to be held at the Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS) at Nandyal on May 29 and 30, the Collector, Vikas Raj, has said. Talking to reporters here on Friday, he said the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would formally open the meet, which would be attended by 8,000 farmers. They would be apprised of the latest trends in crop management and also the officials of the Agriculture Department would get a feedback from farmers. Mr. Vikas Raj said crop diversification, promotion of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and promotion of dairy activity in 80 select villages were the main programmes for the season. The district administration planned to encourage farmers to shift from groundnut to castor cultivation and from cotton to soybean for assured returns as traditional crops had brought losses. Also, 80 villages were selected for promotion of dairy activity. Perennial fodder varieties and exotic varieties of milch cattle would be developed. He said there was scope for development of sericulture and shrimp culture in the district. The Joint Director, G. Hanumantha Rao, the Principal Scientist, G. Narasimha Rao, the Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, Manjuvani, and others were present.
