Coalminer crushed to death in mishap

ADILABAD: Marem Rajaiah (50), a miner at RK 5B incline of the Singareni Collieries at Ramakrishnapur, died on Friday in an accident involving coal tugs on which he was working. Two tubs meant to carry coal from the mine broke free and crushed him to death. - Staff Reporter

Woman naxal surrenders

KURNOOL: A woman naxalite, Karnati Rangamma alias Jyothi (30) of Vadlaramapuram, near Atmakur, surrendered before B. Malla Reddy, SP, here on Friday. Rangamma, who joined the CPI (ML) People's War in 1991, worked with Bhavanasi, Palavanka and Galikonda dalams before surrendering. She was on the protection team of Sakamuri Appa Rao, a Central Committee member, for a short while. She said the Maoist movement was weakened because of surrenders in the last few months. - Staff Reporter

Two farmers end lives

ANANTAPUR: Two farmers committed suicide in the district on Friday. Venkatanarayana Reddy (45) of Sanapa in Atmakur mandal consumed poisonous pills used for storage of seed to end his life. He has been suffering crop loss for the last few years. At Vajrakarur, B. Ramudu (45) consumed a pesticide to end his life. - Staff Reporter

Fake note gang busted

Sangareddy: The Dubbaka police arrested four members of a fake note gang on Friday and seized a xerox machine and colour printer. According to the Siddipet SDPO, A. Ramnarayan Reddy, Inupa Swami (23) of Peda Chikodu, Reddiboyina Ellam (30) of Akaram, Srinivas (30) of Chervapur and Panja Ravinder of Mirudoddi were involved in printing and circulating the notes in the Siddipet region. - Staff Reporter

GO on white ration cards to auto workers

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders on release of white ration cards to autorickshaw workers. GO 57 would benefit about five lakh workers who are self-employed, the Andhra Pradesh Auto and Trolley Drivers Union said in a press release on Friday. The GO specifies that ration cards are to be given to those who have taken vehicles on private finance, Government assistance or driver-cum-owners. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Doordarshan's Saptagiri channel will telecast several important programmes on May 29, 30 and 31 at 6 p.m. The programmes are: `Light combat aircraft' on May 29 (based on exclusive interview with Kota Harinarayana, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad), `Ancient tribes' (interview with Lalji Singh, Director, CCMB) and `Autism' (interview with affected persons). - Staff Reporter

Government college

awarded `B++' grade

TIRUPATI: The SVA Government Degree College for men, Srikalahasti, has been awarded `B++' grade by the UGC's National Accreditation and Assessment Committee (NAAC).

A NAAC team comprising M.I. Savadatti, former Vice-Chancellor of the Mangalore University (Karnataka), Rajan Varghese, Mahatma Gandhi University, Perumbavoor (Kerala) and Dhulasi Birunda Varadarajan from Madurai Kamaraj University (Tamil Nadu), which inspected the college in March, submitted its report recently. - Staff Reporter

City Union Bank

opens branch

KURNOOL: The Chairman of TGV Group of Industries, T.G. Venkatesh, inaugurated a branch of the City Union Bank Ltd here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of the bank, S. Balasubramanian, said the bank had 16 branches in Andhra Pradesh and 138 in the country with an annual business of Rs 5,000 crores. The bank maintained a capital adequacy ratio of 13.8 per cent as against the Reserve Bank of India norm of nine per cent. At present, the bank installed 12 ATMs. - Staff Reporter

Lightning kills

farm labourer

CUDDAPAH: Naguru Nagulaiah, (37), an agricultural labourer, who was struck by light ning died near Jillella village in Duvvur mandal on Friday. Nagulaiah, belonging to Krishnampalle village, was working in the fields when lightning struck him, police said. - Staff Reporter
