Renewed violence as two civilians suffer bullet injuries Renewed violence as 2 civilians suffer bullet injuries

GUNTUR: A constable was killed by Maoists while a naxalite was killed in an encounter with the police near Godu village between Guthikonda and Gundlapalli in Piduguralla mandal on Friday.

Palnadu dalam members shot dead the constable, B. Samuel, at Kocherla in Ipuru mandal of Guntur district. He was among five constables who had gone to the village on bandobust for `Ankamma' annual festival. While another constable fled the scene and returned later, two civilians -- N. Venkateswarlu and Subba Rao -- received bullet injuries.

Naxalites snatched an SLR and 20 rounds of ammunition. The police said four naxalites shot the constable, hailing from Cuddapah, from a close range. The constable is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.

The police said a combing party encountered five naxalites in the forest region at 5 p.m. close to a hill and returned the fire when naxalites fired on them. In the encounter, one naxalite, suspected to be Narasimha Rao (38) of Mellavagu, was killed while others fled the scene.

Meanwhile, people's organisations have alleged that the police picked up Rao from his village in a van, which has been denied by the police.

Boy, leader shot dead

Ongole Special Correspondent writes: A 10-year-old boy died accidentally when Maoists opened fire to kill a Congress leader, Nasara Reddy, at Thamadapalli in Yerragondapalem mandal on Thursday night. Later, they shot dead Nasara Reddy and left the village.

According to the police, three Maoists, including a woman, went to the village at 11 p.m. when villagers were watching a street show. They called Nasara Reddy aside and shot him from close range. Bullet, however, missed him and hit a boy watching the show who died on the spot.

Undeterred by the accidental death of the boy, the Maoists fired two more rounds at Nasara Reddy and killed him.
