MANGALORE: One person was killed and two others were injured when a furnace on board the M.T. Basaveshwara, a vessel belonging to the Shipping Corporation of India, burst when it was at anchor at New Mangalore Port near here on Friday. The victim has been identified as Ravikumar (26) of Andhra Pradesh, a mechanical engineer who had gone with his colleagues for a routine inspection. The Panambur Circle Police Inspector, T. Kodandaram, said the incident occurred around 8.20 a.m. when Ravikumar along with his colleagues, Diwakar Singh of Bihar and Balram Sarkar of West Bengal were carrying out mechanical inspections. The impact of the blast was such that Ravikumar who sustained nearly 100 per cent burns, succumbed on the spot. Mr. Kodandaram said the body of Ravikumar was charred beyond recognition, while his colleagues escaped with burns. They are said to be out of danger. The body of Ravikumar has been handed over to the captain of the vessel, Deen Dayal, after conducting an autopsy, Mr. Kodandaram added.
