Sharp showers

MADURAI: The Thursday night sharp showers brought the temperature level to a bearable point on Friday.

The hottest day of the `agni natchathiram' was registered on Thursday, with the maximum temperature being 39.8 degrees Celsius. But, within 24 hours, it dropped by nearly four degrees following the late night rain.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam stood at 112.5 feet with an inflow of 99 cusecs and discharge of 130 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 29.20 feet with no inflow and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 1563 mcft.

Idyapatti registered the highest rainfall of 79.2 mm, followed by Chittampatti - 60, Thaniyamangalam - 52, Mayiladumparai - 38, Melur - 34, Periyar dam and Pulipatti - 30 mm each, Tekkadi - 23, Madurai - 20.7, Viraghanur dam and Andipatti - 17, Uthamapalayam - 16, Shanmuganadi and Mettupatti - 15 mm each, Kallandiri and Bodinayackanoor - 13 mm each., Vaigai dam - 10.5, Periyakulam - 7.4, Madurai airport - 4.2, Manjalar dam, Sothuparai dam and Peranai - 2 mm each.

Woman gets three-year jail term for infanticide

A Mahila Court sentenced a 32-year-old woman to undergo three years imprisonment for killing her infant girl.

According to prosecution, S. Vasantha of Seelayampatti in Theni district administered milk mixed with poison (erukkampal) to her two-day-old infant on August 8, 2003. The baby died almost instantaneously. The Chinnamanur police had registered a case.

The Mahila Court Judge, Annamalai, who heard the case, sentenced the accused to three years in prison.

Policeman commits suicide

A police head-constable attached to the Armed Reserve unit here committed suicide by consuming poison on Friday.

According to the police, Pitchaimani (40) took the extreme step owing to family problems. The body was shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem.

The Tallakulam police have registered a case.— Staff Reporter.
