Thiruvananthapuram
At least three wanted persons listed as "gang leaders and habitual offenders" by the district police are suspected to have illegally emigrated to foreign countries, including Dubai, England and Italy. Currently, the Special Branch police are probing how a Barton Hill colony-based gang leader, who is accused in several cases in the city, had gone to Dubai. An official said he had flown to Dubai from Chennai using a passport procured locally by furnishing false details. The police are trying to find out the gang leader's sponsors in Dubai and also how he procured the passport. The police suspect that the gang leader had fled the country with the help of certain city-based businessmen who have investments in hotel and liquor business in Dubai. Several persons, who are accused in cheating and cheque fraud cases, are suspected to be in Dubai. A gang leader in Kazhakkuttom, who is accused in more than 10 arms and explosive act cases, is believed to have illegally immigrated to Italy last year using fake travel documents. Another gang leader in the city is learned to be controlling his local operations from England. Some of those suspected to have escaped to foreign countries figure on the top of the police list of "very active offenders" indulging in serious and violent crime in the district.
