Water supply to

be disrupted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The supply of drinking water to Chala, Pazhavangadi, Sreekanteswaram, Thampanoor, Kamaleswaram, Fort, Ambalathara, Beemappalli, Attukal, Kovalam, Kuriathi, Valiathura and Poonthura would be disrupted from 10 p.m. on Saturday to midnight on Sunday, a pressnote issued here on Friday said. This is to facilitate relaying of the main water line at Pazhavangadi consequent to the rebuilding of the bridge across the `Amayinzhanchan thodu' there. — Staff Reporter

Ex-service men

stage dharna

Hundreds of ex- servicemen took out a march to the official residence of the Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman, and staged a dharna to protest against the additional tax imposed on military canteens under the VAT (Value Added Tax) regime. The agitation was organised by the Kerala State Ex-Services League. The Chirayinkeezh MP, Varkala Radhakrishnan, inaugurated the march at the Asan Square. Inaugurating the dharna at Devaswom Board Junction, the State general secretary of the League, Varghese Kappil, said the ex-servicemen would intensify their agitation from June 15 unless the Government withdrew the new tax imposed on military canteens.

Total ban on

plastic at zoo

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The director of museums and zoos has imposed a total ban on carrying and using plastic items on the premises of the city zoo from June 1 onwards. A pressnote issued here on Friday said that though the Government had earlier banned the entry of plastic items inside the zoo earlier itself, it has been found that visitors still carry such items as balloons and other toys inside the zoo. This was why a total ban was being imposed. — Staff Reporter

Protection sought

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Civil Supplies Officers' Association has demanded adequate protection to the employees in the wake of the manhandling of the staff of Civil Supplies Corporation on Wednesday. The functioning of the LPG godown at Valiathura was temporarily stopped as the officers were not allowed to function as per the regulations of the IOC, it said. Raids in Shanghumughom, Poonthura and Valiathura areas had revealed illegal possession of consumer cards and cylinders by consumers.
