Hospital conducts mock drill on disaster management

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: More than 25 persons were injured when in an explosion at the basketball court of the M.S. Ramaiah Medical college around 10.30 a.m. on Friday.

The fire services, police and medical staff from seven hospitals in north Bangalore were immediately pressed into service for rescue and rehabilitation.

A triage was immediately set up at the site of the incident to provide first-aid to the injured persons and the fire services and medical personnel dispersed the crowds that gathered around the explosion site.

Injured persons were than transported to the hospitals in the area and were given treatment. Wonder why you did not see anything about this incident on TV? The entire rescue operation was part of a disaster management drill organised by the Accident and Trauma Department of M.S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital.

"Any such incident produces multiple casualties. We want to network with the hospitals in north Bangalore to provide coordinated critical care within the quickest possible time," said Anita C. Ramesh, Chief of the Accident and Trauma department, of the hospital.

The mock drill, she said, helps organisations define their roles amongst themselves more clearly and prevent duplication of work. "If an injured person has received first aid, we do not want him to wait in line at another hospital for the same treatment. We want to minimise any mix-ups that may happen," she said.

S. Kumar, Principal and Dean of the M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, said that the institution plans to approach the World Health Organisation to get its disaster management project recognised.

He said the institution also plans to approach schools and colleges in the area to help them in disaster preparedness and management.

Health officials of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, who took part in the mock drill, said that the BMP was planning to organise a similar programme for its health centres.
