BANGALORE: The Air Chief Marshal, S.P. Tyagi, on Friday opened the flight test crew memorial built on the premises of the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) here. The memorial has been built jointly by the Indian Air Force, the Defence Research Development Organisation, and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., to commemorate all flight test crews who died in harness. The memorial has a steel hemisphere and three-sided obelisk over it, signifying three arms of aviation endeavour science, engineering, and flight test. The geometric exactness of the two structures stands for precision and excellence. Speaking on the occasion, the Air Chief Marshal recalled the contribution of flight test community to the cause of aviation, particularly towards self-reliance in airborne equipment in the country. He said that it was only due to the selfless service and supreme sacrifice of the flight test crews that air travel is a preferred mode of travel today. It has also helped make the air force a lethal force, he added. Air Chief Marshal Tyagi also laid a wreath on the memorial. V.M.A. Das, wife of late Group. Capt. Suranjan Das, who was killed in a HF-24 (Marut) aircraft in 1970, and veteran test pilot and first Commandant of ASTE, Group. Capt. V.M. Kapil Bhargava, also laid wreaths. The Air Officer Commanding in Chief Training Command, Air Marshal S. Bhojwani, heads of all DRDO laboratories, representatives of HAL and family members of seven deceased flight test crews, participated in the ceremony.
