KASARAGOD: Krishna Naik of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been elected as the president of Paivalige panchayat. He defeated Chandra Naik of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in the election held on Friday. While Chandra Naik got five votes, Krishna Naik secured seven votes to head the 14-member council. While one member belonging to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) abstained from voting, the vote cast by a Congress member was declared invalid. The election saw cross voting within the UDF and LDF. Krishna Naik was supported by five CPI(M) members and one member each from the Congress and the IUML. The CPI nominee was favoured by two members each from the CPI and the BJP and one member from the IUML. Krishna Naik was the president and Chandra Naik the vice-president of the panchayat for the first three years. Later, Krishna Naik was unseated through a no-confidence motion moved by the Congress, with the support of the CPI, the BJP and the IUML. As a result, Chandra Naik was made the president of the panchayat a few months ago. He was, however, ousted from the president's post through a no-confidence motion.
