Staff Reporter

Inaugurates training programme for poll staff ahead of Penukonda bypoll

ANANTAPUR: The district Collector and District Election Officer, Y.V. Anuradha, has observed that a few incidents that occurred in the district in the recent times have created a scary image of Anantapur for outsiders though it is not the fact.

Inaugurating the second phase of training classes for presiding, assistant presiding and zonal officers for the Penukonda by-election, polling for which is scheduled on June 2, here on Saturday she called upon them to discharge their duties without any fear or favour. The training programme was held at Anantapur and Guntakal.

In all, 220 POs, 220 APOs, 550 other polling staff, 27 route officers, 27 ZOs and 12 senior officials would be deployed for the by-election. It was the responsibility of the chosen employees to conduct the election as per the Election Commission guidelines, she said.

Steps taken

The Collector claimed that all the necessary measures required for fair and peaceful election had been taken and the district was very much peaceful. The election staff need not worry about the situation, she said.

She suggested the staff not to enter into arguments with voters and polling agents and conduct polling as per EC norms. Each polling station would be manned by an SI and six armed policemen. The Collector warned against the use of cell phones by the polling staff as well as agents. She directed them to conduct mock polling from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. on the day of polling in the presence of agents.

Identification proof

Further, she instructed them to allow voters having any of the 14 alternative identification proofs mentioned by the EC as also the identification issued by village secretary and endorsed by another Government employee, as per the High Court direction, for the benefit of voters who were not having electronic photo identity cards.
