CHENNAI: After four days of intense competition in the Coastal Nationals, the ambience was more relaxed at the Chennai Harbour on Saturday. The Indian Oil Open sailing championship and then the celebrity race put a smile on plenty of faces. In the Open competition where 40 boats in various categories sailed, Rajesh Chowdhary, switching to a Laser Radial boat, clinched the first place and won the prize money of Rs. 10,000. N.S. Johal, in the Laser Standard, finished second, and Ankur Prasad and Gerard Arokiaswamy (cadet class) and Nishant Chandrasekar, in an optimist boat, took the third and fourth spots. The conditions were challenging; the wind speed was between 20 to 25 knots and the swells were about six feet high. The results were arrived at using the Handicap system. Among others, Test cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji and film actor Revathi, participated in the celebrity contest. During the evening, Major General Kamal Kumar gave away the prizes. in a function at the Park Hotel. The results: Open Class: 1. Rajesh Chowdhary (Laser Radial), 2. N.S. Johal (Laser Standard); 3. Ankur Prasad and Gerard Arokiaswamy (cadet class); 4. Nishant Chandrasekar (Optimist class).
