HYDERABAD: An ordinance to prohibit private moneylenders from charging interest beyond 12 per cent from farmers will be promulgated, according to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. He said that the Government had already declared moratorium on the payments of money borrowed by farmers from banks and private moneylenders. A Bill replacing the ordinance would be introduced in the Assembly later.
Seed village
Outlining the measures taken by the Congress Government in an interview to BBC radio on Friday, he said it was proposed to develop one `seed village' in every mandal all over the State. It would act as a nodal village to produce quality seeds to be supplied to neighbouring villages and ensure good produce. This was among the special measures to prevent the sale of spurious seeds, pesticides and fertilizers. Dr. Reddy claimed that there was a visible momentum among the 1.10 crore strong farming community in Andhra Pradesh following the measures taken by his Government.
