HYDERABAD: The Visakhapatnam-based Single Super Phosphate Manufacturers' Welfare Association has urged the Government to revise the MRP by Rs. 44 for a bag of 50 kg, as against the increase in the manufacturing cost of Rs. 55. G. Srikrishna, vice-president, at a press conference here on Saturday said the industry was suffering huge losses due to policy discrimination. It would be viable only when a level playing field was provided with respect to other phosphatic fertilizers. While defending the association's plea, he said the revised MRP was only as an ad hoc measure to provide a `lifeline for survival of the seven SSP manufacturing units in the State. The increase will provide the essential supplies of this low-cost and important fertilizer to farmers in the State. According to Mr. Srikrishna, during 2002-2005 the other phosphate manufacturers, like DAP, using the same raw material were allowed to increase the price from Rs.2,000 to Rs.2,800 a metric tonne to compensate the raw material cost hike. He blamed present policy of the Government for rendering SSP production uneconomical.
