PCC list likely to be cleared soon

Sujay Mehdudia

Inclusion and deletion of some names

It is understood that the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, has held parleys with the senior leaders in order to settle the matter and put an end to the squabbling over the issue of PCC delegates.

NEW DELHI: Suspense over the ongoing tussle in the Delhi Congress over the nomination of 140 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates is likely to be cleared soon.

The party high command is expected to give the green signal for clearance of the list following the inclusion of some and deletion of other names in the wake of strong objections raised against some individuals with doubtful credentials.

According to insiders in the party, with the re-election of Sonia Gandhi as president of the party, the focus will now be on the States.

The list of PCC delegates had run into trouble after some senior leaders of the party objected to the inclusion of some individuals who had either worked against the party or had doubtful credentials.

"No name found to be involved in any criminal activity or case has been included in the list. The list has been sent to the Union Minister for Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, who is also in charge of party polls for approval and I am still awaiting a word from him,'' the Pradesh Returning Officer (PRO), Mahesh Joshi, stated.

Discussions

It is understood that the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, has held parleys with the senior leaders in order to settle the matter and put an end to the squabbling over the issue of PCC delegates.

He is also believed to have apprised Mr. Fernandes of the ground realities and discussed certain names that had been put on the hold due to some reason or the other.

Interestingly, the former Deputy Speaker of Delhi Assembly, Kiran Chaudhary, had rushed to Delhi from her campaign trail in Haryana to protest against the deletion of her daughter, Shruti Chaudhary's name from the PCC list from the Delhi Cantonment area.

It is understood that Ms. Chaudhary met senior party leaders including the political secretary to the Congress president, Ahmed Patel, and protested against the decision to drop her daughter's name and include AICC secretary, Praveen Dawar, in her place.

It is understood that Mr. Chaudhary managed to get her daughters name re-included in the list following the intervention of the leadership.

Names put on hold

Similarly, a dispute is also understood to have arisen over the inclusion of certain names in the Karol Bagh Parliamentary constituency. It is learnt that nearly four names have been put on the hold in this area.

Similarly, the situation has been amicably sorted out in the South Delhi Lok Sabha cnstituency where the interests of the former DPCC president and Kalkaji MLA, Subhash Chopra, have been accommodated.

Another party MLA, Anil Bhardwaj, considered close to Mr. Patel, had also voiced his concern over inclusion of certain individuals at the behest of a certain Member of Parliament.

However, it is learnt that by and large things have been worked out and around a dozen-odd names are being scrutinised by the party leadership.

There is no heartburning and all the leaders have put their heads together and worked out a solution.

For his part, Mr. Sharma said there was no dispute over the list and things had been sorted out to the satisfaction of one and all.

The list will be made public as soon as it is approved by the AICC and that is likely to happen very soon, he added.
