CHENNAI: Over 130 men and women in neatly pressed uniforms and smart headgear spilled out of the conference hall at the City Police headquarters on Saturday morning. They were the proud recipients of "Excellence Awards" from Commissioner of Police R. Nataraj in seven categories.

The list of 136 awardees had "outstanding men and women, men with good moustache and good physique and best officers, armed reserve personnel, motor transport personnel and dog handlers." Copies of Tirukkural, Bharathiyar's poems and a volume on meditation and yoga accompanied the certificates of merit and the Rs. 500 cash prize. The four outstanding personnel awards went to inspector P. Vasanthakumari of Flower Bazaar (C-1) station, sub-inspector Chandrasekaran (T-7 Avadi Tank Factory) and head constables Joseph (R-8 Mambalam) and Haridass (Traffic). Fifteen personnel, including Additional Deputy Commissioner A. Kaliyamoorthy to head constable Manickam were honoured for their "splendid moustache." Inspector Devaraj and company marched down the aisle to collect their "men with good physique" certificates.

"Physique is very important. Our men have been receiving flak for not maintaining their bodies mainly due to irregular timings and eating habits," said Mr. Nataraj. The exercise was "revived" to motivate his personnel. "Human resource development is very important. Most of the time our people are caught up in day-to-day activities. We decided to call the officers and honour them in person so they will serve the public better," he said.
